Updated CPD Requirements for Emergency Physicians from 2026

We would like to advise specialist emergency physicians of an important update to CPD requirements, effective from the 2026 CPD Year (1 January 2026 – 31 December 2026). These changes are part of an enhanced focus on procedural competency and leadership development within emergency medicine practice.

What’s Changing?

A new requirement will apply from 2026 onwards:
Only from 2026 onwards: there is an additional requirement for specialist emergency physicians to:
  • Complete one activity per year to reflect on and develop leadership skills that will contribute to:
    • workplace improvement
    • system-wide improvement and/or
    • effective interdisciplinary teamwork

This is in addition to the previously established specialist high-level CPD requirement for specialist emergency physicians:
A specialist emergency medicine physician (including all fields of specialty practice) must:
  • Complete three core procedural skills per year:
    • 1x core airway procedural skill
    • 1x core breathing procedural skill
    • 1x core circulation procedural skill

Please note that these new leadership-focused requirements do not apply to the 2025 CPD Year. The 2025 requirements remain unchanged. The remaining requirements remain unchanged (annual professional development plan, registration requirements, program-level requirements)

For full details,  please refer to the Program Requirements policy.
